Fortnite Brand Activation, 2024

Epic Games set out to diversify the online gaming and e-sports industry by creating more opportunities for women and people of color, two groups often underrepresented in this space. To help realize this vision, I designed a modular pop-up experience targeted at the Seven Sisters Colleges and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The activation celebrated both the cultural significance of Fortnite and the creative possibilities offered by Epic’s Unreal Engine, inviting students to engage with competitive gameplay, game development tools, and meaningful connections with industry professionals.

Central to the design was the concept of kitbashing, a model-making technique where existing parts are combined to create something entirely new. This idea became the guiding narrative for the pop-up, symbolizing collaboration, diversity, and innovation. The experience was structured as a collection of unique modular blocks that could be added, rearranged, or customized to fit each campus’s unique environment and needs. This flexible setup allowed the activation to include a variety of interactive elements such as different games, podcast stations, and stream lounges, while also providing dedicated spaces for students to connect directly with game developers and Epic Games professionals.
These professional engagement opportunities were designed to support students interested in fields like animation, game design, marketing, and other creative and technical disciplines. By creating these direct connections, the pop-up aimed to offer insight into potential career pathways and inspire students to pursue roles in the gaming industry. During the activation’s stay on campus, the space became a lively social hub featuring live events, streaming competitions, and giveaways, which fostered excitement and strengthened community among attendees

The main interactive activity, Kitbash Queen, challenged students to use Fortnite’s digital asset library within the Unreal Engine platform to select and combine model components into entirely new, unique creations. Participants could work collaboratively or independently to “kitbash” their designs, and had the option to 3D print their models or take them home. This hands-on activity encouraged creativity, experimentation, and personal expression, all while reinforcing the overarching theme of the experience: that we are better together.”
